Clarity is the term given to indicate the purity of a diamond. Most diamonds have minute imperfections and the clarity is the way of grading the purity depending on the number of imperfections the diamond has or does not have.

A Diamond with no imperfections or inclusions, as they are called, would be a top grade diamond and would be clPrincessified as internally flawless (IF). It would be extremely rare and would command a much higher price than one which has many recognisable imperfections.

The grading scale is as follows:

IF would have no inclusions and be internally flawless, perfect clarity in other words.
Both grades VVS1 and VVS2 would be very very small inclusions, pin pricks in fact.
VS1and VS2 are still very small and difficult to see.
SI1 and SI2 would be tiny but easily seen.
I1 is small and recognizable immediately.
I2 and 13 would have larger and/or numerous inclusions, obvious recognisable immediately
There is also third pique (pronounced peekay) sometimes written as p3.

Flaws in Diamonds can include external blemishes as well, usually from natural causes but also from poor polishing.

In practice most blemishes and inclusions are so small as to have no or little effect on the beauty of the diamond.

Clarity is one of the important factors in diamond pricing, along with color. While the color does affect a diamond's appearance, obvious inclusions (often called "flaws") may distract the recipient's eye from a stone's overall beauty.

Let's take a look at clarity in detail to understand how it affects the price.

Clarity greatly varies from one diamond to another, and no two are exactly alike. Diamonds are graded and identified uniquely according to the type and number of inclusions present in them.

The following Detail gives an idea

FL - Flawless
No internal or external inclusions of any kind visible under 10x magnification to a trained eye, the most rare and expensive of all clarity grades.

IF - Internally
Flawless No internal inclusions visible under 10x magnification to a trained eye, but there may be some tiny external irregularities in the finish.

VVS-1 - Very Very Slightly
Included 1 Usually just one tiny inclusion visible only to a trained eye under 10x magnification.

VVS-2 - Very Very Slightly
Included 2 Tiny inclusions visible only to a trained eye under 10x magnification.

VS-1 - Very Slightly
Included 1 Very small inclusions visible with 10x magnification.

VS-2 - Very Slightly
Included 2 Several very small inclusions visible with 10x magnification.

SI-1 - Slightly
Included 1 Small inclusions visible with 10x magnification.

SI-2 - Slightly
Included 2 Several small inclusions visible with 10x magnification.

SI-3 - Slightly
Included 3 Inclusions that may be visible to the naked eye for a trained observer.

I-1 - Included 1
Flaws that are visible to the naked eye.

I-2 - Included 2
Many flaws clearly visible to the naked eye that also decrease the brilliance.

I-3 - Included 3
Many flaws clearly visible to the naked eye which decrease the brilliance and compromise the structure of the diamond, making it more easily cracked or chipped.

How it affects the price?
All other factors being equal, as the grading decreases the price decreases exponentially. This is because diamonds with greater quality (correspondingly with lesser inclusions) are that much rarer. Along with the type and number of inclusions, their position also makes an impact on the value and brilliance of a diamond. Inclusions at the edges of a diamond can be hidden by the setting selected. However, inclusions in the middle of a diamond may significantly affect it’s radiance and beauty and so it’s value.

What Is Diamond Clarity?
Diamond clarity is a term used to describe the absence or presence of flaws inside or on the surface of a diamond or other gemstone. A perfect stone with perfect clarity, or clearness, is rare, and most flaws that do exist in jewelry grade diamonds cannot be seen without looking at the gems through a jeweler's magnifying loupe.

•Imperfections, or flaws, inside a diamond.

•Tiny spots of white, black, or other colors.

•Cracks. Some cause no problems at all. Other could cause the stone to split.

•Colored and uncolored crystals.
Diamond Blemishes

•Flaws on a diamond's exterior surface.

•Many exterior flaws are the result of the cutting and polishing process.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamond clarity using 10X magnification. They tag diamonds as:

Fl, Flawless
•No internal or external flaws.

IF, Internally Flawless
•No internal flaws. Slight external blemishes.

VVS1 & VVS2, Very, very slightly included.
•Minute inclusions. Difficult for even an experienced grader to detect.

VS1 & VS2, Very slightly included
•Minute inclusions. Not easily seen by an experienced grader.

SI1 & SI2, Slightly included
•Inclusions that are noticeable to an experienced grader.

I1 & I2 & I3, Included
•Obvious inclusions that may affect transparency and brilliance.

If you read the detailed explanations for each clarity category, you'll find that flaws usually cannot be seen without magnification, even by an experienced jeweler. Most are tiny imperfections that do not affect a diamond's brilliance. It often isn't until you reach the bottom level of "I" categories that imperfections begin to detract from the beauty of the diamond.

Don't be concerned if the clarity of the diamond you choose is not near the top the scale.

Consider the Location of Diamond Flaws
It's important to consider where a diamond's flaw is located in relation to the stone's cut, because some flaws are more noticeable when positioned in specific areas. Your jeweler can offer advice about poor positions of flaws.
In her book "Diamonds, The Antoinette Matlins Buying Guide," the author encourages us to get to know the imperfections within our diamonds, pointing out that since no two diamonds are alike, the flaws provide an important road map that may help us identify our property.

Clarity Enhanced Diamonds
Diamond clarity can be enhanced with treatments, but not all enhancement techniques are permanent. The two most popular treatments are:

Diamond Laser Treatments

•A laser is used to remove some types of inclusions. An experienced jeweler can usually see the trail left by the laser.
Laser treatments are permanent.

Diamond Fracture Filling

•Tiny cracks in a diamond are filled with a colorless substance.

•Fracture filling is not considered permanent.
Treatments allow us to own a diamond that appears to be of a higher clarity than it truly is. Treated diamonds should cost less, so it's important to buy diamonds from a jeweler you trust, one who evaluates and discloses any type of treatment that's been performed.

Clarity is just one element you must consider before you buy a diamond. You'll look at its color, its cut, its carat weight, its price and many other factors. Your quest to purchase a diamond is kind of like a large jigsaw puzzle. It's only when all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place that you find the perfect diamond for you.
